The Handy-Hoist bike and Tandem Lifting Assistant
I designed the handy-hoist in 3 seconds, It took 3 years to get a patent and 4 guys from the government to screw up a deal. Here a petite woman illustrating how easy it is to lift a bike onto the top of a car with great ease. After producing the prototype, I found a partner by mistake who develops their own stamping forms for the automotive industry. He took one look at the device and said, “I will be your partner,” and he started to manufacture and produce it. I went in on weekends to help and we made a more beautiful-looking unit—and that’s the one sitting on top of my old car when the model came to demonstrate it.
And the only reason that Canadian tire ordered so many was I know the owner of one of the Canadian tire stores who told me that I could demonstrate my product for free outside his store which was a pretty big store and I got lots of people that were interested in it including the corporate executives at Canadian tire.
50 years ahead of it’s time. Canadian Tire Ordered 19,000 units and in the middle of the deal told us to provide them with a colours box. Just before the signing of the deal, my mother got sick and I had to walk away from the deal..
Because I was also the new product development guy, I came up with the tandem lifter prototype which by the end when we decided not to produce this product because of the dangers of the consumer not installing these properly on their vehicles and the insurance company giving us scenarios the types of accidents that could happen. We decided not to go through with the project in the end and a Chinese dentist bought the tandem version is seen here below and he was the happiest guy in the world because he was able to lift it up onto the top of his minivan by himself. Even though we had to make him an extension rod to be old to push the bike up and we made it spring assisted because his tandem was so heavy. But it worked extremely well.
Has a U.S. and Canadian Patent This one above was the tandem lifter. One was made to see if a short Chinese person could lift it up onto a minivan It worked.
Vehicle roof rack
Patent number: 5421495
Abstract: A roof rack for use with vehicles. The roof rack includes a frame attachable to the roof of a car and an arm movable relative to the frame between a first position wherein a portion of the arm is positioned below the roof along the side of the car and a second position wherein a portion of the arm is positioned above the roof of the car. The device also comprises a lock for locking the arm in its second position. The roof rack includes a stop mechanism for stopping the movement of the arm at its first position and selecting the first position such that the arm, or the object mounted thereto, does not touch the side of the car. New Handy Hoist Instructions 2
Thank you for purchasing the High-Quality Handy-Hoist, which will bring you many years of use. Your Handy-Hoist is guaranteed for 2 years against normal wear and any defects. The manufacturer has the right to repair or replace any components at its discretion. Shipping must be paid by the consumer.
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF HANDY-HOIST.
You have purchased a unit that has been handcrafted by professionals, ensuring years of reliable use. Most people do not like reading instructions, but we urge you to do so to ensure safety. Just follow these easy steps. Installation takes approximately 5 minutes after reading these pages.
Wheel Retainer
- When you open the box, you may need to move the wheel retainer.
- The bolts were only put in finger-tight, so they should be easily removed.
- Measure the centers of your tires (between the wheels where they touch the ground) to determine the correct position of the wheel retainers.
- The Handy-Hoist allows you to adjust the wheel retainers so they are close to the center of the tires.
Installing the Crossbars
- Slide the crossbars on your roof rack so that they are 24 inches apart (center to center).
- Do not tighten them down until instructed.
Mounting Hardware
- Gather the following items from your package:
- 8 rectangular washers
- 4 U-bolts
- 4 nuts
- You will need a wrench, preferably an adjustable crescent wrench (6 to 10 inches long).
- Arpad, a tool should be provided. Please prepare the necessary tools.
Installation Process
- Temporarily put on the mounting hardware as shown.
- Do not forget to place a rectangular washer on either side of the channel before inserting the U-bolt from underneath.
- Have at least one nut in your hand and tighten one end of the U-bolt finger-tight only.
- When finished, keep the nuts loose until instructed to tighten them.
Securing the Vertical Bar
- When looking at the unit from the side, you will see the spring pin that keeps the bike secure in the upright position.
- Ensure the spring pin is locked before proceeding.
- Place the vertical bar in, then release the unit while holding the bar to prevent it from sliding out.
- Take the provided nuts and insert them into the holes to secure the vertical bar.
These nuts may be removed when you are not carrying your bike, and the vertical bar may be stored in your trunk or under your car seat.
- Removing the vertical bar allows entry into underground garages and other height-restricted areas.
- Always be aware of your vehicle’s overall height, including the Handy-Hoist with the vertical bar attached.
Securing the Bike
- It is recommended that you use your own padlock to secure your bike.
- The Handy-Hoist is designed so that you can use your own lock.
